Résumé de la présentation
« Biomolecular archeology has revitalized research into material culture by unveiling a range of perishable organic products once inaccessible to archaeologists. The extraction and characterization of lipid molecules deposited by human activity on the surface or inside ancient ceramics, for example, allow unprecedented possibilities for the reconstruction of foods and foodways in the past. In this presentation, we show how different types of commodities (e.g., aquatic, ruminant, non-ruminant, plant) processed in Early to Late Woodland ceramics from northeastern North America have been identified using well-established molecular and isotopic criteria. We then discuss case studies that have shed light on the motivations behind the adoption of pottery and subsequent spatiotemporal patterns in pottery uses. A project combining these data with experimental archaeology and Indigenous knowledge illustrates a promising avenue for overcoming certain interpretive limits facing this field of study. »
